I wasn’t sure if I should do a newsletter this week with all of the news going on in the world that is more pressing. Then I thought about everyone spending more time at home, and having some positive distractions to help them through.
One for me is going to be the new Animal Crossing game, which I’m excited to dig into, with a bit of trepidation over how I commit to things. I feel guilty with how I make new projects for myself and weight everything as the most important thing to be doing right now, making it hard to do any of them well.
Anyway! Here’s a selection of the things that I read and watched this week. Stay safe out there everyone!

I read the graphic novel ‘Open Borders: The Science and Ethics of Immigration‘ by Bryan Caplan and Zach Weinersmith earlier this week. I would highly suggest it. The book is an easy read but lays out several arguments for open borders, as well as responses to some common complaints against the idea.

Old CSS, new CSS by Eevee – This is a long and interesting article, recounting HTML and CSS from someone who’s been using both for most of the time they’ve been around. I also started with Animorph’s fansites, so I feel kinda called out tbh.
Imagine a world without YouTube by Adi Robertson – One of my favorite podcasts, 2 Girls 1 Podcast, had a discussion with Adi Robertson this week about the article and went in depth on some of the ideas covered. Adi shouted out Mastodon a bit as one idea of how a decentralized web looks now and could work more, which made me happy!
Progress, Postmodernism and the Tech Backlash by Alex Danco – I admit that this is a lot like Ribbon Farm, which takes ideas that I find interesting but the wraps them up in so many politics that I don’t agree with and a level of jargon and in-group references. Still, there’s a nice thru-line here of capitalism, commodification, and transformation in how tech has transformed the world so much in ways that most consumers are just fine with while a vocal minority like myself rails against it sometimes.

I started making a playlist of songs that I like on YouTube, preferably ones with entertaining videos. Many of them are silly, but none are outlandishly weird. Without comment, here’s a few favorites:
