Not complaining about tech, but enjoying where I’m at

This is the Wolfpaw Weekly. Don’t remember signing up or don’t want this anymore? It’s easy to unsubscribe.

I’m doing a 366 Day Challenge, and am 59 days in. You can follow along on my PixelFed account.

I’m in Miami now for WordCamp Miami this weekend. I’ll be giving a presentation on Creating a Recurring Revenue Stream through Maintenance. This is basically what I do for a living at FixUpFox and I’m excited to share it with more people!

Following up on my Ethics talk last week, I thought that I might not have any attendees, but ended up with two and a half (one came in rather late) people to talk about Ethics on the web. Not great, but not as bad as no one!

I had a newsletter worked out in my head that I started typing since Wednesday about my depressive feelings around the state of tech discourse at the community level. A few events have come up that have made me disheartened to be around people in tech.

I’ve decided that it’s not worth writing this week, as I don’t have anything of value to add to the conversation. I’m hoping that this weekend helps to either change my mind, or give me a bit more of an infusion of hope, like Flashback Conference did at the start of the month.

Until then, enjoy a few things that I read and watched this week, and I’ll see you soon!

Conference talk: WordPress’s role in a changing web by Heather Burns – Heather has been active in the WordPress space for a long time, and in the privacy and technology space even longer. When she says that we have problems in our community, we should listen. This directly relates to the vagueposting above.

February 2020 Weblog: We blog, you blog by Jay Hoffmann – I blog, you blog, Jay blogs, we all blog!

Signal Is Finally Bringing Its Secure Messaging to the Masses by Andy Greenberg – I’ve been using Signal for years. I thought it seemed like really late catch-up to add replies and stickers, but this makes sense. The Signal team is using their cash infusion to make the app better to attract more general users, not just the security-conscious folk like myself. If you haven’t used Signal yet, you can easily replace your SMS app with it!

Game Grumps Animated – 10 Minute Power Hour – Shoocharu spent the past two years making a drawing for every episode of the Grumps. They put them together into a short compilation, showing off talent and fun. Also how has it been two whole years since that channel started!?!

“My Year In Mensa” Interview with Jamie Loftus – An entertaining discussion with the author and self described “dumb slut” who joined Mensa and wrote about her experiences there in an entertaining way.

The Case for Fan Fiction (feat. Lindsay Ellis and Princess Weekes) | It’s Lit – Some of my earliest experiences online were in reading and creating fan fiction. I think that it can easily deserve a seat at the table when it comes to the world of literature, and these two give plenty of history as well as reasons why.

Casino Royale — How Action Reveals Character – This past week we’ve been watching the Daniel Craig Bond movies in prep for the new one coming out soon. Rami Malek is amazing so it’s worth me seeing the next one in theaters. This video came up yesterday and is a good dissection of the start of Casino Royale and how it tells the story of Bond without having to spell it out.

Night Runner – Magnum Bullets (feat. Dan Avidan) – Dan is a furry confirmed!

That’s it for this week. Enjoy your weekend, and share any good finds of your own with me!
