The last time that I kept up a weekly newsletter was in 2016, and the last issue that I published of that newsletter was on the first weekend of November.
I’m hoping that I don’t do that again this year, but I’m as nervous about next week as anyone. I spent months before the election in 2016 checking polls and patting myself on the back. This year I don’t have any such confidence, and I’ve avoided looking at a single poll.
If you’re a reader in the US, and you are eligible, please vote. Make the conversation this year not about sitting out because you don’t like either of the candidates.
I’m going into a proper holiday weekend with some friends and close ones around me, doing some hard work and hopefully having a good time. Before you get there too, here’s some things that I’ve liked this week.

There are problems in every subculture. The Five Geek Social Fallacies exist for a reason. Worst Year Ever did a story at the start of the year after visiting a con (remember those?) and interviewing attendees about a domestic terrorism case that happened at that con in 2014, and yet was ridiculed by the media in no small part because of the makeup of the victims.

I didn’t know any of the backstory of this phrase that I’ve heard so often in open source software that it’s become an accepted trope. I really liked learning how wrong this idea was, and how good it’ll be to remove it as a frame of reference.

There’s a good episode of 2 Girls 1 Podcast about this very topic this week. It’s nice to see that at least there are some things that are so obvious sounding that they can garner bipartisan support.

THE MIDNIGHT GOSPEL: Is It Deep or Dumb?
I finally got to watching the end of the Netflix show The Midnight Gospel, and I’m glad that I did. I figured that it was a lot of navel gazing early on, but the show really pulled it together near the end. Especially the long session with the creator’s mother, using audio from before she died of cancer.
I asked a friend the other day to share with me one of their favorite weird animations after chatting about The Midnight Gospel, and this is what they came up with. It definitely fits the bill.
It’s a spoopy weekend. Safely celebrate with friends, and prepare for a hard week next week.
