Another week of working from home and coming to the new normal of online events

This is the Wolfpaw Weekly. Don’t remember signing up or don’t want this anymore? It’s easy to unsubscribe.

I’m doing a 366 Day Challenge, and am 122 days in! This is as opposed to the 1015 days in that I somehow was last week. We’re officially 1/3 of the way through the year! You can follow along on my PixelFed account.

This morning I gave a presentation at CMS Philly on building your first plugin for WordPress. I’m not sure how it went, honestly. Having no audience feedback real time is kinda daunting! If you want to check it out, the slides are available on my slides.com account, and the code is up on my Github account. The video should be available soon, and I plan on turning this into a blog post tutorial soon.

As always, here’s a few of the things that I’ve read and watched this week that I’d recommend going into the weekend.

๐Ÿ“–

Would We Have Already Had a COVID-19 Vaccine Under Socialism? – Vanessa A. Bee, In These Times

Hey look, getting political in my newsletter again. I’m not here for the specific problem (the current pandemic) but more the overall idea: re-hauling public/private partnerships and returning more power to the former as opposed to the latter.

Scientists Agree: Coffee Naps Are Better Than Coffee or Naps Alone – Joseph Stromberg, Vox

david agrees that coffee and naps are both good. But I’ve not tried this specific technique out. I’ll have to test this week and come back with results.

Celebrating ‘Hey Jude,’ the Beatles’ Most Open-Hearted Masterpiece – Rob Sheffield, Rolling Stone

We watched ‘Yesterday’ on HBO this week. It’s a movie about some sort of reality bending ordeal (we’ve still been debating it here) that made almost everyone on the planet unaware of the existence of The Beatles and their music. While “composing” Hey Jude in the movie the main character started describing it, and this article happened to come across my feed earlier in the week.

What If Improv Were Good? – Jesse david Fox, Vulture

Speaking of things watched, we gave the three part special, Middleditch and Schwartz a watch this week. They weren’t the strongest comedy specials that I’ve ever seen, but they were better than most pre-recorded improv that I’ve seen.

ICANN finally halts $1.1bn sale of .org registry, says it’s ‘the right thing to do’ after months of controversy – Kieren McCarthy, The Register

A former CEO of ICANN registered a corporation the day after they lifted caps on .org registrations, with the intent of buying control of the registry. Nothing at all shady there, nope. Thankfully, for the moment, the sale has been halted. Worth keeping an eye on though, as where there’s money to be made, there will be grifters and lobbying.

๐ŸŽฅ

In addition to the movie and show listed above (both of which I’d recommend), there were a few YouTube videos that I liked this week as well.

How Fictional Pandemics Reflect the Real Thing (Feat. Lindsay Ellis and Dr. Z) | It’s Lit

If you asked me to name fictional pandemics, I’d probably have come up with a few of the titles in this list, most of which I’d read already. But then there were a few that I didn’t even think of and want to read or re-read.

Lockdown Productivity: Spaceship You – CGP Grey

I like the metaphors and analogies that CGP Grey uses sometimes. Treating your living area as a spaceship and you as a long-term explorer worked well for the idea of keeping routines going in self-isolation to not go too crazy and maybe even come out of this better off.

How Marvelman Changed Superheroes – Nerdwriter

I knew that the character of Captain Marvel has had a very long and storied history, branching into so many distinct characters across multiple companies. I didn’t know that the character was revived by Alan Moore, but it makes sense in how godlike and disconnected from humanity the character became. It’s proto Dr. Manhattan, while Moore was (slightly) less disheveled and angry with the world.

The Offspring – Here Kitty Kitty

Did you forget that The Offspring existed a bit like I did? I used to love them in high school. Now they mixed cat costumes, physical distancing, face masks, and ‘Tiger King’ into an interesting cover. Took me down a nostalgia trip for a bit.

Gorillaz – Feel Good Inc. with a 2,000 Marble Musical Instrument (Mashup)

Gosh, this song is also rather old at this point. I’ve never seen a musical instrument like the marble machine used here, but it was pretty cool seeing it in action.

That’s it for this week. Everyone stay safe and healthy out there ๐Ÿ’
