I hope that you had a good holiday if you celebrate. I got to spend time with my loved ones for a few days. Since this is the time of apologizing for and explaining all of our actions, it is a group that I already regular see, and we got negative Covid-19 tests a week before and several days after.
Anyway, I’m back now, kinda. Here’s some things that I read, watched, and thought about this week. If I haven’t reminded you lately, you can always respond to this email with things that you think that I should see. We’re bringing two way communication back!

I know that I’m not alone in wishing for a bit more of the time when the web was weird. Or even just having a web made up of online spaces meant for community, not engagement. There are a variety of ways that peer-to-peer networks could be built to facilitate this type of engagement.
dReally I just want to try my hand at having a digital garden of my own. I’ve been perusing a few that I like belonging to others like Maggie Appleton and Tom Crichtlow. Heck, even just bringing back the general idea of having a homepage would be a great step forward in my mind.
But our web is built for engagement above all. And those who can get attention get rewarded with cash.

This is a rather old short story, but prescient in several ways. What if we are ostensibly treated well by our colleagues, but still have to hide who we are to advance or even maintain our jobs and lifestyles. This is already true for plenty of people, and I could see it becoming true for even more of us if we don’t reverse heavy consolidation of wealth.

I like some of the creative things that YouTube has been doing lately. Almsot helps you forget that it can quickly turn into a toxic cesspool if it isn’t actively maintained.
One of those things that is interesting is the “Infinite Bad Guy” project. Syncing up countless covers of the Billie Eilish song and letting you click between them while keeping the track going is a neat display of their skills put toward fun for a song that has over 1 billion views on the platform.
