I don't have any new blog posts this week. I admit, for someone who loves being at home, physical distancing has been kinda hard. Not that I want to be going everywhere (though I am missing a few WordCamps that had been pre-planned), but it still hurts. Us internet kids are used to long distance friendships. But we usually have at least some real world events to keep us tethered, and that isn't the case right now.

Phew, that was a whole thing! Here's a selection of the things that I read and watched this week. Stay safe out there everyone!
|
Is marriage over? - Manvir Singh, Aeon - I don't think that marriage is over, but I don't at all mind that the stranglehold of marriage on culture is dying a bit. From legal and financial rights and responsibilities being spread to other types of partnerships, to traditions like expensive weddings and rings on the decline, there is a lot of good happening outside of the world of marriage to form unions.

Our Fascination With Canon Is Killing the Way We Value Stories - James Whitbrook, Gizmodo - Similar to the idea of debating over whether spoilers negatively affect the enjoyment of a work of popular culture (not for me), or whether things are being inserted just to appease some straw SJW (probably not), canon is either the most important thing or a blocker for creativity. Popular culture is now sprawling works that span media and decades of work, and having a bible for each franchise can be stifling.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Poker Night - Not a new video, but one that keeps popping into my head. Specifically when Yugi says, "Excellent!"
